Point Loma eliminates men's track and cross country. Story.

What's with the "Run For" events? Story. Just so. It's not about you, me, or how wonderful we are. People are hurting and we gotta give it up.

A new study finds static, pre race stretching is not helpful. Story.

Los Angeles Times story on Chelsea King, the high school runner missing in Poway. Link. I'm familiar with the area (having racied the Lake Hodges 50K). Indeed, it is remote and with rough terrain. Some of my older runner buddies are tough hombres, but even they are wary about being alone in remote areas without "protection." Some dangerous and creepy folks and beasts abound.

I don’t tweet, I don’t Twitter, I couldn’t even tell you how to read or where to find a Twitter message. I don’t actually see the point of limiting communication to a haiku. I find the whole effusion of communications technology bewildering. All you have to do is overhear a certain number of cell phone conversations to see that the vast majority of what people say and write to each other is totally pointless. I have an email address and I’m thinking of shutting that down. It’s amazing how overly accessible people are. There’s a lot of communication in my life that’s not enriching, it’s impoverishing. ...So says Michael Lewis.

Julia Lucas (runner and Ian Dobson's squeeze) prefers real food. Link.

Is a big heart a particular problem for the aging athlete? Story. Hey, nothing new here. Move along, folks. Continuing to live is a risk. An annual EKG is my doctor's advice, and to keep running.

The loss of the PLNU Cross Country and Track programs are a point of great frustration to me. The softball field the university has been using for many, many years is owned by the city of San Diego. The only way to the field is through the university campus. It a great field... awesome location... as it lies just above the cliffs. You hit a homerun, the ball is going to get wet.

The university has maintained the field for years... seeded it, watered, groomed, maintained... and so one. Back when I was in school there, we had no women's softball program, but the field was used for intramurals. We even maintained it back then.

It's frustrating to hear that the city wants to revert the field back to its natural habitat. I guess that means no field at all. One would think that the city would want it back for their own use. Not the case... they want weeds, brush, and gophers hanging around.

So, with Title IX, we lose some good programs.

Dear Friends,

I have just read and signed the online petition:

"CSC Issues National Appeal for “Common-Sense Reform” to Title IX"

hosted on the web by PetitionOnline.com, the free online petition
service, at:

http://www.PetitionOnline.com/csc2008/

I personally agree with what this petition says, and I think you might
agre...e, too. If you can spare a moment, please take a look, and consider
signing yourself.

Best wishes,

Orlando Benitez Jr.

We are losing a bunch of good guys, not just athletes but personal friends as well. Many calls were made in the last two days trying to find a way to try to change this but it might not be enough.
